Carbon Black Used in Plastic Industry

Carbon Black is finished product of Carbon Black Grinding Mill. How to use carbon black powder in plastic industry? Usually we should know the purpose, such as coloring, UV protection, or conductive and so on.

1.Coloring: Pigment carbon black is generally better able to coloring plastics.

We choose pigment carbon black as per the coloring ability, physical and chemical character. Usually the darkness should meet the end products requirement, how to solve this problem? We can firstly grind the carbon black powder into superfine powder, the finer it is, the larger of the surface area is, and the stronger coloring ability it is.  In our daily life, PE garbage bags, plastic bag, cables, such material just need normal middle darkness carbon black, the density is low but inner structure is good. 

While mixing, small errors will cause obvious color difference, such as weighing or batch in different proportions. Therefore, we should use larger particle carbon black, with poor coloring carbon black pigment; the amount of carbon black can be a little large, so weighing error will be relatively smaller.  Such powders are broadly used in plastic industry as its high disperses character and lower cost.

2.UV protection

One usage of the carbon black in plastics industry is anti-UV aging. As its higher light absorption ability, carbon black can effectively prevent the plastic degradation from sunlight. As the UV stabilizers in plastic industry, carbon black has below advantages:  1). Transfer light energy into heat energy. 2). prevent certain wavelength of rays on the plastic surface. 3). Anti-aging effects while interception radicals; thereby it can prevent plastic degradation from sunlight. 4). UV shielding when carbon black is in proportion of 2% in plastic.

UV protection ability depends on carbon black particle size, structure and surface chemistry.

When we grind carbon black into superfine powder, the powder surface area increased too much, and the same to light absorbing and shading ability, so the UV protection ability increase too. When the powders come to 20nm, the affection cannot increase anymore. Because when the particle size is too small, the reverse scattering is reduced, and continues forward light will threaten the stability of the polymer.

The smaller inner structure it is, the protection will be more obvious too. That is why when it is smaller, it is much darker.

There are many oxygen-containing groups in the surface of carbon black, so when they are volatilizing, they can eliminate genes generated from polymer decomposition, and therefore the protection ability enhanced.
