As the UV stabilizers in plastic industry, carbon black has below advantages: 1). Transfer light energy into heat energy. 2). prevent certain wavelength of rays on the plastic surface. 3). Anti-aging effects while interception radicals; thereby it can prevent plastic degradation from sunlight. 4). UV shielding when carbon black is in proportion of 2% in plastic.
UV protection ability depends on carbon black particle size, structure and surface chemistry.
When we grind carbon black into superfine powder, the powder surface area increased too much, and the same to light absorbing and shading ability, so the UV protection ability increase too. When the powders come to 20nm, the affection cannot increase anymore. Because when the particle size is too small, the reverse scattering is reduced, and continues forward light will threaten the stability of the polymer.
The smaller inner structure it is, the protection will be more obvious too. That is why when it is smaller, it is much darker.
There are many oxygen-containing groups in the surface of carbon black, so when they are volatilizing, they can eliminate genes generated from polymer decomposition, and therefore the protection ability enhanced.
